Otoplasty
What are the surgical procedures that can be combined with otoplasty ?Otoplasty can be performed alone or in association with other surgical techniques such as face-lift, blepharoplasty or cosmetic surgery. What type of anaesthesia is used ?The operation is normally performed under local anaesthesia with sedation on adults (which means that you will be awake but relaxed and insensitive to pain) and under general anaesthesia on children. If there are fat bags in the lower eyelid and it is not necessary to remove the excess skin, the surgeon can perform the so-called transconjunctival blepharoplasty, without making external skin incisions. How long is the operation ?The blepharoplasty operation lasts FROM 1 TO 2 hours and ends with the application of ice on the eyes. Are there age limits to undergo this surgery ?There are no age limits to undergo this kind of surgery. Most patients who resort to blepharoplasty are aged between 40 and 60, but even at the age of 70 and 80 this surgery is performed successfully . What are the surgical procedures that can be combined with blepharoplasty ?Blepharoplasty can be performed alone or in combined with other interventions such as eyebrow-lift, additive mastoplasty, liposuction ... What are the risks and the complications of this kind of operation ?The cosmetic surgery of the eyelids is a rather simple surgical procedure. However, it procedures it has complications (bleeding, infection) are rare but may occur and can be easily resolved . In order to avoid the risks of such an intervention, it is important to follow carefully the instructions given by the surgeon before and after the operation. Smokers should reduce the use of cigarettes because smoking may increase the risk of complications and slow down the recovery. What does the preoperative examination consists in ?Blepharoplasty is a very customized kind of surgery that, as such, needs a meticulous specialist examination. During the first examination, the surgeon will assess the bone structure of your face, the quality of your skin and periocular muscles, check if there are physical and/or functional defects, and explain to you what results can be achieved and the risks of cosmetic eyelid surgery. The surgeon will also evaluate your general health status in order to make sure that you don’t suffer from diseases such as high blood pressure, clotting or healing disorders which might affect the final results of the surgery. Before the operation the surgeon will provide you with information about the preoperative and postoperative diet and the use of medications, alcohol and cigarettes. At the end of the examination, the surgeon will choose the most suitable surgical procedure for your situation. What happens during the post-operative follow up care period ?During 48 hours following a blepharoplasty surgery, you have to rest up, keeping your head slightly raised. Starting from the third day, you will be able to resume your normal life, but you have to avoid, nevertheless, tiring activities, saunas, and sweat-baths and sunbathing. During the first two days, swelling and ecchymoses may occur around the treated area and they will persist for about 1-2 weeks. Very seldom may infections, haematomas or keloidal scars appear. After 7-10 days, you will be able to resume work, provided that it is not excessively tiring. In the third week, you will gradually be able to resume all your normal activities, including the sports activity. What kind of result can be obtained ?The result, already observable after the first three weeks and it will be definitive about six months after the operation. The result of blepharoplasty is usually very good and long-lasting, but it cannot be described as permanent because it will be always influenced by your lifestyle and by the inevitable effects of gravity and ageing.
